James Blight was born in Longtree, Great Farrington, on 24 April 1846. He attested as an ex-ship’s carpenter, at Plymouth Division on 24 August 1866 aged 20 years. He served aboard PENELOPE (1868-69), HIBERNIA (1870-74), promoted to Corporal in August 1876, BRITANNIA (1877-79), and EURYALUS as a Sergeant from 1 January 1882 to November 1883, but disrated to Private on 22 November 1883. He was drafted to the R.M. Battalion, Egypt, on 7 May 1884, promoted to Corporal in July 1884, returned to normal duties from R.M. Battalion on 16 May 1885, and again promoted to Sergeant on 7 November 1885. He was pensioned without receiving the L.S. & G.C. medal after completing 21 years service on 25 August 1887.
