David Blake was born in Saltash, Cornwall, on 22 August 1864. He entered the service as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. INDUS on 7 September 1885, and then spent a commission aboard STARLING (17 July 1886 until 15 January 1890), where he was advanced to Stoker in February 1887, and earned the medal and clasp for Gemaizah. He subsequently served aboard BELLEISLE (1890-93) receiving advancement to Leading Stoker in January 1892, to Leading Stoker 1st Class aboard EGERIA during April 1893, and to Chief Stoker aboard VIVID II in May 1896, then to serve aboard MAGNIFICENT (1898-1902) and HERMIONE (1902-04). He was pensioned to shore on 30 September 1907. During his career he twice lost a Good Conduct Badge and hence no L.S. & G.C. award.
