William White was born on 13 July 1846. He joined the Royal Navy after being a Student in Kensington, London, as an Assistant Engineer 2nd Class on 2 August 1866, and was promoted to 1st Class on 3 August 1869 and to Engineer on 21 September 1871, no ships being recorded on his papers for this period. He subsequently served aboard H.M.S. AUDACIOUS (1874-76), in Hong Kong Dockyard (1876-79), FIRE QUEEN (1879-81), and JUMNA (1881-83). For the earlier Egypt campaign he served aboard DRYAD (24 November 1883 to 10 November 1884) joining her as a Chief Engineer. In RACER (9 April 1885 to 10 May 1889) he earned the clasp ‘Gemaizah 1888’. He received promotion to Staff Engineer on 8 September 1887, and subsequently served aboard CROCODILE (1889-93) being promoted to Fleet Engineer on 8 September 1891, and ACTIVE (1893-98). He retired in the rank of Inspector of Machinery on 30 September 1899.
