Vernon Brook entered the Royal Navy as a Probationary Assistant Engineer on the 1 July 1900. His first appointment was to H.M.S. MONARCH (November 1900), Guardship at the Cape of Good Hope. He was confirmed as an Assistant Engineer with seniority of 1 July 1901, and with introduction of the new Engineering ranks in 1902 he became an Engineer Sub Lieutenant. He was next appointed to VIVID (July 1903) and PEGASUS (January 1905) where he was promoted to Engineer Lieutenant on 27 February 1905. He served next aboard PROMETHEUS (July 1906), RACER (November 1907), CORNWALLIS (December 1909) and MOSQUITO (January 1913). During World War I he was appointed to OSIRIS (September 1915), a commissioned merchant vessel, to ARGONAUT (October 1915), and OSIRIS II (October 1915) the latter vessel being a merchant that had been converted to a Depot Ship in April 1915. He served next aboard LATONA (June 1918) and HERMIONE (September 1919) and retired in 1920 being promoted to Engineer Lieutenant Commander on the Retired List on 20 October 1922. He died circa 1937-39.
