William Mynard was born on 22 May 1870 in Plymouth, Devon, and was a box maker before joining the Royal Navy aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE as a Boy 1st Class on 17 June 1885, aged 15 years. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in September 1903 and was pensioned ashore on 17 May 1910 after 22 years adult service. He joined the R.F.R. on 22 May 1910 and volunteered for a five year agreement with the Royal Australian Navy inFebruary 1913. He served aboard AUSTRALIA (June 1913 to April 1918) and LONDON (April to May 1918), returning to the UK and served aboard VIVID II (May 1918). He was advanced to Regulating Petty Officer on 16 April 1919 and demobilised on 24 May 1919 but was allowed to re-enter the Navy as an Able Seaman (Pensioner) aboard COLOSSUS (April 1921) and GLORIOUS (July 1921) being finally discharged to shore ‘services no longer required’ on 22 August 1921, having already passed the compulsory retirement age of 50 years.
