Sergeant-Major Edward Hotson enlisted into the 84th Regiment, joining them at Sheffield in June, 1878. He became Sergeant in 1886, Colour-Sergeant 1890, and was posted to the Wath Detachment, 2nd V.B. Y. & L. Regt., 1894. He served in the South African Campaign, joining the 1st Battalion at Ingogo, with the Company of Volunteers under the command of Captain Revell-Sutton, 1901. Promoted Sergeant-Major in November, 1901, he was discharged on 12th May, 1909, after completing 30 years honourable service. Sergeant-Major Hotson was awarded the long service medal in 1905, and the Meritorious Service Medal, with annuity, in 1933.
