M.C., London Gazette, 25 August 1917: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although wounded in the knee, he continued to command and direct his company until all his objectives were obtained. By his devotion to duty he helped his battalion to secure its objectives, and set a magnificent example to his men.' The above award was won during the battle of Messines with the mining and blowing up of Hill 60. A. Conan Doyle, in his history, devotes a whole chapter to this crucial battle. Alfred Percy Harrison joined the 10th Service battalion, West Riding Regiment, from the Inns of Court O.T.C., on 19 September 1914 as Temp. 2/Lt. He was promoted Temp. Lt. on 10 November 1914, and Temp. Captain on 29 June 1915.
