Westerdale served in Egypt from 30 August to 17 September, 1915, when he was posted to Gallipoli, serving until the evacuation of the Peninsuler was completed in January 1916. The battalion went to Mudros where he stayed until 18 March, joining his battalion in Egypt and thence to France. The 2/1st London were disbanded and the men transferred to the 1/1st London, with whom he served until 19 September, 1916, being wounded in the action at Leuzu Wood. Returning to France on 17 March, 1917, he served until he died of wounds on 18 March, 1918.
