Colin Jackson served with 1 Squadron SAS in South Vietnam during 1967-68, and with 3 Squadron during 1969-70. He is mentioned in SAS: Phantoms of the Jungle (p316): ‘The only patrol to contact the enemy was a six-man patrol commanded by Second Lieutenant Terry Nolan, who had stayed in Vietnam when 2 Squadron had returned to Australia. On 20 March his patrol was inserted about nine kilometres slightly east of due north from Phu My and during the next 24 hours they heard numerous shots. Then in the afternoon of 21 March female and male voices were heard approaching the patrol. One armed VC started searching the foliage near the patrol while Nolan and his scout, Private Colin Jackson, lay motionless. When they heard the VC disengage the safety catch on his AK47, Jackson shot him at a range of four metres.’ This was the first of three ‘kills’ credited to Jackson in Vietnam.
