William Wadley was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, and enlisted into the 45th Foot at Whitehall on 16 June 1864. He served with the 45th Foot in the Abyssinian campaign of 1867, and was promoted to Corporal in December 1868. He became Sergeant in January 1873 and transferred to the 1st Battalion, 24th Foot, on 22 February 1879, and proceeded to South Africa, where he was promoted to Coulor-Sergeant in June 1879. He reverted to the rank of Sergeant at his own request in June 1880, received his L.S. & G.C. medal in November 1882, and was finally discharged at Kilkenny in June 1885 with a pension of 20 pence per day for life. Sold with copy service papers.
