Captain Philip Francis Dale was wounded and taken prisoner at Loos on 26 September 1915, whilst serving with the 11th Essex Regiment. He was imprisoned in Germany at Fürstenberg until 3 May 1918, when he escaped, resulting in the award of the Military Cross, London Gazette 30 January 1920, ‘in recognition of gallant conduct and determination displayed in escaping ... in accordance with the terms of Army Order 193 of 1919.’ He was demobilised in March 1919, but soon volunteered as an Interpreter with the British Military Mission to South Russia, with the rank of Temporary Captain, and was Acting British Vice-Consul at Kieff in the winter of 1919. Sold with further research including copy m.i.c. and extracts from his W.O. Correspondence File which includes his account of his capture at Loos in 1915.
