H.M.S. Terrible was a 1st Class Cruiser of 14,200 tons, built by Thomson of Glasgow and launched in May 1895. A total of 263 officers and other ranks of the ship were entitled to the China Medal with single clasp ‘Relief of Pekin’.

Able Seaman S. J. Warren, H.M.S. Terrible, landed with the Naval Brigade in South Africa and served in Lieutenant Wilde’s 12-Pounder Unit. As a Leading Seaman on the same ship, he served in the Relief of Pekin with the Service Company.
