Iltutmish, the architect of an independent Delhi sultanate, issued Tankas of both pictorial and purely calligraphic type. Surviving examples of the unusual horseman type, are generally crudely struck and somewhat worn. The present coin is rather better than usual and superior to the specimen offered in the 'Skanda' collection (Spink-Taisei 9)
