This lot was sold as part of a special collection, The collection of medals to the 41st and 69th Regiments of Foot (The Welch Regiment) formed by the late colonel Dudley Thornton, CBE.

William Clapp, by trade a twist lace maker, was born in the Parish of Warbrugh, Derby, and enlisted into the 45th Regiment at Nottingham on 18 January 1834, aged 17 years 6 months. He landed in India in October 1834 and transferred to the 41st Regiment on 1 November 1836, his own regiment having been ordered to Europe. He was discharged in the rank of Sergeant at Templemore on 11 October 1855, being placed on the permanent Staff of the Militia (2d Derbyshire). He was then ‘in possession of the Medal inscribed “Candahar, Ghuznee, Cabul, 1842”, also was in possession of four good conduct badges when promoted.’ Sold with copy discharge papers.
