Alphonse Legros (1837-1911), the French painter who lived in London from 1863, was inspired by the Italian Renaissance medallists and started to make his own medals, imitating Renaissance style, in 1881. His pioneering method of work led to a revival of the cast medal in Britain, although he himself had his medals cast in Paris in small editions
