William James Davies was born in Lambson, near Haverfordwest. A Carpenter by occupation and a member of the 4th Volunteer Battalion South Wales Borderers, he attested for one years regular service with the regiment at Newport in April 1900, aged 20 years, 10 months. He served in South Africa from 11 May 1900 until 20 May 1901, being discharged on 27 May 1901. Served in the Mercantile Marine and the South Wales Borderers during the Great War.
