Emmanuel John Agelasto was born in Manchester on 25 November 1887, the son of John Emmanuel Agelasto, an East Indian Merchant and later Shipping Agent, living at 265 Bury New Road, Broughton, Salford - the family being of Greek origin. Agelasto was commissioned in to the 8th (Ardwick) Battalion Manchester Regiment on 15 August 1914. Serving with the battalion he entered Gallipoli on 31 July 1915. He contracted gastroenteritis on 20 August 1915 and was invalided to Mudros and thence to England, arriving at Plymouth on 9 September 1915. Upon his arrival he was diagnosed with dysentery and was seen to be vomiting blood. After treatment he appeared before a Military Medical Board at the War Office on 17 August 1916 and it was established he was suffering from appendicitis, syphilis and flat feet with hammer toes and had neurasthealmic (shell-shock) symptoms! He was discharged and subsequently awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot). With copied research.
