Charles Archibald Russell was born in Ashton, Cheshire. Serving in the 16th (1st City) ‘Pals’ Battalion Manchester Regiment, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 8 November 1915. He died of wounds on 5 August 1916, aged 21 years and was buried in the La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie. He was the son of Charles Edward and Georgina Russell, of Didsbury, Manchester. His younger brother, Reginald Malcolm Russell, a Private in the 15th Battalion Royal Scots, was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
