George Hibberd was born at Southampton and enlisted into the 23rd Foot at Winchester on 20 September 1854, aged 16 years. He was appointed Drummer in January 1856 and re-engaged for a further term of 11 years in April 1866. He volunteered to the 45th Foot on 30 June 1860 and was re-appointed as a Drummer the following September. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with a £5 gratuity in August 1876, he was finally discharged on 7 May 1878, having served more than 20 years in the East Indies, including the operations before Lucknow for which he received the medal and clasp. Sold with copied discharge papers.
