The Ashantee War medal awarded to Quartermaster Patrick McCormick, 23rd Foot, who was commissioned from the ranks when serving as Sergeant-Instructor of Musketry

Patrick McCormick was borne in the ranks for 13 years 128 days, rising to the rank of Sergeant-Instructor of Musketry. He was commissioned Quartermaster on 19 November 1873, vice Abraham Button, pronounced medically unfit to proceed abroad with the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment to the Gold Coast. McCormick embarked with the 2nd Battalion in his new rank, aboard H.M.S. Tamar, for Cape Coast Castle on 21 November 1873, and received the Ashantee medal with the clasp ‘Coomassie’. He left the 2nd Battalion to join the 1st Battalion at Woolwich on 10 April 1880, and embarked for service in India on H.M. Troopship Malabar on 16 August 1880. He was granted the honorary and relative rank of Captain on 19 November 1883, and died in India on 5 June 1884. Sold with copied research.
