Henry Southern was born in the Parish of St Paul’s, Sheffield, and enlisted for the 8th Brigade, from the 3rd North York Militia, at Doncaster on 17 May 1876, a cutler by trade, aged 18 years 11 months. Serving in the 105th Regiment, he was appointed Bugler in July 1877 and transferred to the 25th Brigade on 29 May 1879, for service in the 2/24th Foot. He served with the 24th in South Africa until 12 January 1880, and afterwards at Gibraltar until 11 August 1880, and India until 24 November 1881, when he returned home. He was finally discharged on 17 May 1888. Sold with copied discharge papers.
