Herbert Leigh Simpson was appointed a Lieutenant in the 2nd Glamorganshire Volunteer Rifle Corps in July 1886. He later joined the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion, Welsh Regiment and resigned his commission as a Captain in May 1900.
