Ambrose Hope joined the 1st Monmouthshires (Territorials) in 1936 and transferred to the Regular Army with an appointment in the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers, prior to the outbreak of hostilities in September 1939. Having then witnessed active service in Norway in 1940, he transferred to the Recce Corps and remained similarly employed until the war’s end.
On the reformation of the T.A. in 1947, he rejoined the Monmouthshires and quickly gained promotion to Corporal in ‘C’ Company, 2nd Battalion. He served in ‘C’ Company for the remainder of his career, gaining advancement to Sergeant in June 1948 and to Company Sergeant-Major in December 1959. A good shot and a highly qualified rock-climber, C.S.M Hope was killed in a motor-cycle accident in July 1964; sold with copied research.
