Robert Champion Streatfield was born on 28 June 1835 and was commissioned Ensign in the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot on 12 August 1853. Promoted Lieutenant on 26 October 1855, he served in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny with a detachment of the 24th Foot at the defeat of the Jhelum mutineers on 7 July 1857, and was severely wounded in both legs, leading to his right leg being amputated. Appointed Paymaster on 8 June 1858, he was promoted Honorary Major on 12 August 1868, and appointed Staff paymaster on 1 April 1878, and Chief Paymaster three years later. His final appointment was District Paymaster, South Eastern District Staff, with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel, prior to his retirement in 1883.
