Thomas Giles was born at Yeovil, Somerset, and attested there on 10 February 1858, aged 25 years, a glove cutter by trade. He was promoted to Corporal on 27 December 1861; Sergeant, 10 February 1863; Colour-Sergeant, 17 November 1865; Sergeant-Major, 17 December 1876. He served in the Ashantee campaign of 1873-74 and qualified for the Coomassie clasp for service north of Prah, 4 February 1874. He was discharged on 30 May 1881 having completed his second period of limited engagement and was then in possession of the Ashantee medal and long service medal. The latter would have been surrendered upon receipt of the Meritorious Service Medal with annuity of £10 on 6 May 1889. He died on 26 August 1895. Sold with copied research.
