William Frederick Day arrived in France as a Private in the 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers on 13 August 1914 and, for his subsequent gallantry in the Field, was mentioned in despatches by Sir John French (London Gazette 17 February 1915, refers), in addition to being awarded the Russian Medal of St. George, 4th Class. He later served in the acting rank of Corporal in the Royal Engineers.
