William Gorham, who was born in October 1884, arrived in France as a member of the 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 6 October 1914 and was taken P.O.W. on the 20th of the same month. He served for 15 years in the ranks and for four years as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class, prior to his appointment to Sergeant-Major in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers in May 1924. He was awarded the Army M.S.M. in AO 98 of 1953 and his MIC entry confirms his earlier participation in the Waziristan operations of 1921-24.
