The first meeting at Lambton Park, organised by John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham (1792-1840), was held on 18 October 1821 for ‘gentleman riders’ only. The course is only recorded as having been used for racing until 1825, although the land was known as ‘the racecourse’ for most of the next century and is recorded as such when cavalry were billeted there in 1915
