The first horse racing at Goodwood, the estate controlled by the family of the Duke of Richmond, was staged in 1802 at the best of Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke. Racing at Lewes began in the early 18th century and the first stand was built in 1772; its rudimentary facilities led to the closure of the venue in September 1964. Plumpton racecourse, initially a venue for hare coursing, was established in February 1884
