D.C.M. London Gazette 3 September 1918: Sjt. W. L. Harris, M.M., R.W. Surr. R. (Brickley).
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his company had suffered heavy casualties, including his platoon officer, he dragged his severely wounded officer into a shell hole and held on. Later, when an enemy machine gun came into action behind a hedge close to him he killed every man in the team before they opened fire and destroyed the gun. At dusk he carried back his wounded officer and rejoined his company. He did splendid work.’
