John Humphrey Barbour, MB, was born in Huyton, Lancashire, in August 1873. He was a Civil Surgeon, who operated from home, from 1900. He was commissioned Lieutenant, Royal Army Medical Corps, in January 1901, and served with the corps in operations in Cape Colony and in Orange River Colony between September 1901 - May 1902.

Barbour held posts in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1903-1905, and in India 1908-1913. He advanced to Major in January 1913, and served during the Great War in the French theatre of war from 20 August 1914. He was placed on retired pay in 1923, and was discharged from the Regular Army Reserve of Officers in 1928. He died in October 1944.
