Arthur Heath Benson was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, on 12 January 1890. A Surveyor by occupation, he attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 9 November 1914. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 16 May 1915 and served with the 15th Battalion Canadian Infantry (48th Highlanders of Canada). Benson was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant with the 3/5th Battalion Royal Scots on 14 July 1916 and was promoted to Lieutenant on 15 January 1918. Attached to the 1/4th Battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment in January 1918, he joined them in India and later saw service on the N.W. Frontier. Returning to England, he was demobilised on 24 February 1920. With copied service papers, gazette extracts and m.i.c.; together with nine officer’s rank ‘pips’ and four other badges.
