Henry Lawrence Haughton was born at Tavoy, Mergui, Lower Burmah, on 1 October 1857, the third and youngest son of Lieutenant-General John Colpoys Haughton, C.S.I., Bengal Army. He was educated at Winchester and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, from where he matriculated in 1875. He was a cadet at the Royal Military College before being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the 29th Foot on 11 May 1878. Embarking with the regiment for India in January 1879, he there volunteered for duty as a Transport Officer and served in the Afghan campaign from 21 October 1879 to 31 May 1881. As Brigade Transport Officer he accompanied the force under Major-General R. Phayre in its advance to the relief of Kandahar (Medal). He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 December 1880. He was appointed a probationer to the Bengal Staff Corps with effect from 16 March 1882, attached to the 10th Bengal Native Infantry as an Officiating Wing Officer. He was selected to proceed to Egypt as A.D.C. to Major-General R. J. Hughes, of the Indian Contingent, but, before he was able to take up his appointment, he died of cholera at Benares on 9 July 1882.
