Ernest Whitmore was born in Newport, Shropshire in August 1886 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on September 1907. Advanced to Stoker 1st Class in H.M.S. Hermes in December 1908, he was pensioned ashore in September 1912 and transferred to the R.F.R. on the following day. Recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, his subsequent wartime appointments included the cruiser Sappho from August 1914 until December 1916 - the ship being part of the Grand Fleet, and utilised as flagship tender. Whitmore was demobilised in June 1921; sold with copied service paper.
