John Douglas Packham was killed in action on 1 July 1941, when his ship the ocean boarding vessel H.M.S. Malvernian was bombed and set on fire in the Bay of Biscay - she remained afloat until the 19th, when she had to be abandoned, 31 survivors reaching Corunna on the 21st and another 25 Vigo on the 22nd. Packham has no known grave and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial; the above described forwarding box is addressed to Mr. L. V. Packham, 118c Dawson’s Road, W. Croydon, Surrey.’
