Arthur Claude Nobbin was killed in action on 9 April 1942, when H.M.S. Hermes was attacked by 70 Japanese dive bombers off Ceylon and went down inside 10 minutes, with a loss of 19 officers and 283 ratings. The son of John and Gwendoline Nobbin of Brixton, London, he was just 17 years of age and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
