Thomas Murphy was killed in action on 13 April 1942, while serving in the S.S. Empire Progress, which ship was torpedoed by the U-402, commanded by Baron Siegfried von Forstner, 200 miles north-west of the Azores while bound from Glasgow to Tampa, Florida. The captain, seven crew and four gunners were killed; the above described forwarding box is addressed to the recipient’s father, ‘Mr. P. Murphy, 69 Lowerhouse Lane, Widnes, Lancs.’
