Leonard Hatcher died on active service on 9 June 1941, while serving as a Gunner in 4/2 Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery. He has no known grave, was 20 years of age and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
Three vessels were sunk on this date, the cargo ship Silverpalm in the North Atlantic, which was torpedoed by the U-101; the cargo ship Diana south-east of Iceland, which was bombed by enemy aircraft; and the cargo ship Dagmar east of the Isle of Wight, which met a similar fate.
