John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudoun (1598-1662), Covenanter, arrested for treason in 1640 but subsequently pardoned, was one of the Scottish commissioners who sought to mediate between the two sides in the Civil War, ultimately without success because King Charles refused to consider escaping the country while under the protection of those commissioners
