Edmund May Pizey was born in Clevedon in June 1893, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service as a Temporary Flight Sub-Lieutenant, 7 June 1915. His elder brother C. P. Pizey competed in the Daily Mail Circuit of Britain Air Race of 1911, and also served with the R.N.A.S. during the Great War, dying of dysentery in Greece, 11 June 1915.
Pizey qualified as a Pilot at R.N.A.S. Eastchurch, 22 July 1915, and served with No. 4 Wing on the Western Front as well as undertaking instructional duties at Eastchurch.
