Provenance: A. Morris Collection [from R.K. Richardson January 1999].

In November 1642, a commission under the Great Seal of England was sent to Sir Richard Vyvyan authorising him to set up a mint in Cornwall in order to pay troops loyal to the King. In his research, Edward Besly identifies a letter from a certain Walter Kestell, dated Boxing Day 1642, stating that Vyvyan was already busy striking coins in Truro (BNJ 1992, pp.102-3)
