James Calderwood, a native of Ayr, Scotland, was born in 1833 and enlisted for 12 years’ service in the Bengal Artillery Regiment in January 1853. He is confirmed on the medal roll, compiled at Meerut on 17 November 1858, as engaged in the operations against the mutineers, serving in 2nd Troop, 1st Brigade, Horse Artillery (medal and 2 clasps) under Colonel Henry Tombs C.B., one of the great outstanding officers of the Bengal Horse Artillery, whose Victoria Cross group of medals was sold in these rooms in December 2017. Tombs’ troop served with distinction during the Mutiny and is remembered today in the Army as 143 Battery (Tombs Troop) Royal Artillery. Calderwood served until 1859 when he was discharged at his own request.
