1 officer and 31 other ranks of the 5th Dragoon Guards were present at Abu Klea, where they formed part of the Heavy Camel Regiment. Major Atherton and 9 other ranks were killed, and 7 other ranks were wounded, 1 of whom died of his wounds. 2 men from the Regiment were awarded the D.C.M. for Abu Klea.
