Henry Morgan was born in the Parish of Plymouth, Devon, and enlisted for the 40th Foot at Exeter on 25 September 1804, aged 20, for unlimited service, a baker by trade. He was promoted to Corporal in 1813 and was discharged at Glasgow on 19 January 1819, in consequence of ‘a Reduction in the Establishment of the Regiment... and diseased tibia occasioned by gunshot wounds.’ His conduct is stated to have been ‘very good, he served in South America, Peninsula, North America, and was wounded in the Left Thigh at Salamanca, and in the Left Leg at Waterloo.’
