Ernest Hoyes was born in 1893 and was a resident of Bardney, Lincolnshire when he attested for 4 years service with the 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment (T.F.) on 11 December 1915. He served in France with the 1/4th Battalion from 16 June 1916 and was posted to Brigade Bomb School in the field on 29 July 1916. He was hospitalised with ‘Trench Feet’ on 23 December 1916, re-joining his unit on 24 Feb 1917, and hospitalised again for a time with Impetigo on 28 November 1917. He was posted to the 2/4th Battalion on 24 January 1918 and was wounded in action on 28 March 1918 during the British advance over the River Somme to the Hindenburg Line. The schedule number of his M.M. indicates that it was also awarded for this period. He returned to convalesce at a Command Depot in England for the remainder of the war.
