Harry Brutnell was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire in 1894. He attested for the 1/4th Lincolnshire Regiment (T.F.) on 28 August 1914 and disembarked in France with his battalion on 1 March 1915. Aside from two weeks leave in England in January 1918, he remained in France and Flanders until after the conclusion of hostilities. He was wounded three times during the war. Firstly on 3 February 1916, rejoining his unit on 22 April 1916 after a period in hospital in Rouen. His service record shows he was wounded in action the following year on 29 April 1917. He was promoted Sergeant on 8 April 1918 and wounded for the final time on 29 September 1918 when he suffered shrapnel wounds to the face and received treatment initially at No. 4 Casualty Clearing Station. His M.M. Schedule Number indicates that the award was most likely for the Battle of Amiens in August or early September 1918.
