James Albert Beck was born in 1886 at Swineshead, Lincolnshire. He attested for the 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment (Militia) on 20 February 1904 at the age of 17 years and 4 months and was discharged on 1 March 1908. After the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted in his former regiment and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, arriving in France on 12 May 1915. He was one of the six sons of Richard and Elizabeth Beck who served during the Great War. Herbert Henry Beck, a younger brother, was killed in action serving with the 1st Lincolns on 1 July 1916 and William Frederick, an older brother was killed serving with the Grimsby Chums in October 1917.

James Albert Beck was discharged class Z on 21 February 1919 and died in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1971.
