The French naval vessel La Coquille completed a circumnavigation of the globe from 1822-5 under the command of Louis Duperrey, with Jules Dumont d’Urville as second-in-command. Later renamed L’Astrolabe, the ship completed two further voyages of exploration under the command of Dumont d’Urville, the second of which included a visit to Antarctica in 1837-8
