Harry Douglas Hopcraft was born at Woodstock, Oxfordshire, in 1893 and attested for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He served with the 1st/4th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 March 1915 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the same Battalion on 29 August 1917. He was appointed to the Acting rank of Captain while commanding a Company from 30 June to 4 October 1918, and was promoted substantive Lieutenant on 1 March 1919. For his services during the Great War he was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire. He was one of the founder trustees of the Deddington branch of the Royal British Legion in 1925, and he died at Oxford in September 1975.
