Cyril James Ussher Murphy (1899-1957), aka ‘Mad Murphy’ or ‘Spud’, was one of a set of twins born to Revd. James Murphy (†1919) and his wife, Emmeline, of Rathcore. Referred to as ‘the genius of the family’ by other members of it, he suffered from meningitis as a child. Exceptionally bright, he was educated at the Abbey School in Tipperary, Drogheda Grammar and Trinity College, Dublin, where he secured the Medical Travelling Prize. This enabled him to work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in the immediate post-War years, returning to Dublin in 1922 and the Meath Hospital, where he remained for the rest of his career.
